Darts checkout chart: every finish from 170 to 2
A checkout is the visit that takes your score to exactly zero. In a double-out game the last dart has to land in a double or the bull, so not every score can be finished, and most can be finished more than one way. The chart below gives one route for every score from 170 down to 2: the fewest darts first, then a finishing double that forgives a miss, then the setup darts a player would choose. It is the chart that lights up on the scoreboard in Throwline.
How to read a route
- T20
- Treble 20: the thin inner ring, three times the number (60).
- D16
- Double 16: the outer ring, twice the number (32). The green dart is the one that finishes.
- Bull
- The inner bull, 50. It counts as a double, so it can finish.
- 25
- The outer bull, a single 25.
- 19
- A plain number is a single: anywhere in the big part of the bed.
Big finishes170–101
63 finishes and the seven bogey numbers. Three darts, except 101, 104, 107 and 110: two darts, on the bull.

How double out works
In 301, 501 or 701 each player counts down to zero, and in the standard game the leg has to end on a double. That rule is double out, and it is why a checkout chart exists at all.
- Exactly zero, last dart a double. On 40, D20 finishes. On 41, a single 1 first, then D20. The bull counts as double 25, which is how 170 goes out: T20 T20 Bull.
- A bust scores nothing. Go past zero, leave yourself on 1 (no double makes 1), or reach zero with a dart that is not a double, and the whole visit is wiped: the score goes back to what it was before the visit.
- Odd numbers need a single first. Every double is even, so on an odd score one dart has to make it even before the double. That is why 41 is 1 D20 and 3 is 1 D1.
- Straight out is the relaxed version. Any dart that reaches zero finishes, so there are no bogey numbers and 1 is not a bust. Throwline plays both; double out is the default.
The bogey numbers
Seven scores of 170 or less have no three-dart checkout: 159, 162, 163, 165, 166, 168 and 169. They are the bogey numbers. From 159 up, only 160, 161, 164, 167 and 170 can be finished at all.
The reason is the last dart. The biggest double is the bull (50), and two darts score at most 120 (T20 T20). So for a score to go out, what is left after the double has to be something two darts can make, and just below 120 there are gaps: two darts make 120, 117, 114, 111 and 110, but not 119, 118, 116, 115, 113, 112 or 109. Every bogey number lands in one of those gaps:
| Bogey number | To finish on the bull, two darts must make | To finish on D20, two darts must make |
|---|---|---|
| 159 | 109 · no two darts make it | 119 · no two darts make it |
| 162 | 112 · no two darts make it | 122 · more than 120 |
| 163 | 113 · no two darts make it | 123 · more than 120 |
| 165 | 115 · no two darts make it | 125 · more than 120 |
| 166 | 116 · no two darts make it | 126 · more than 120 |
| 168 | 118 · no two darts make it | 128 · more than 120 |
| 169 | 119 · no two darts make it | 129 · more than 120 |
Any smaller double leaves more than 120, which two darts cannot score. On a bogey number, do not aim for a finish: score with the visit and leave one for the next. Two darts can finish any score from 2 to 110 except 99, 102, 103, 105, 106, 108 and 109, so leaving 110 or less (and not one of those) gives you a two-dart chance.
Do not confuse bogey numbers with the visit totals three darts cannot score at all: 163, 166, 169, 172, 173, 175, 176, 178 and 179. Throwline's keypad refuses those.
Why T20 first
Look down the big finishes and almost every route opens with T20: 57 of the 59 three-dart finishes from 170 to 101. There are three good reasons.
- It is the biggest treble. Sixty points with the first dart leaves the smallest number for the two that follow.
- Your hand is already there. In 501 you spend the leg aiming at the 20, so starting a big finish on it needs no change of aim.
- A miss still scores. A single 20 instead of the treble still takes 20 off the score.
When a route moves off T20, it is because another one ends on a better double or needs easier setup darts. On 157, T20 T20 would leave 37, an odd number that no double can take, so the route is T20 T19 D20. Only two three-dart finishes open with something else: 122 (T19 25 D20) and 128 (T16 T16 D16).
Why D20, D16 and D8
When a score can go out more than one way in the same number of darts, the chart picks the finishing double in this order: D20, D16, D8, D18, D12, D10 and so on, the bull last. D20 ends 56 of the routes on this page, D16 24 and D8 21. They are the doubles that forgive a miss: hit the single 16 instead of D16 and you are on 16, which is D8; miss that into the single 8 and you are on D4. D20 leaves 20 (D10), and D10 leaves 10 (D5).
How the chart is worked out
Every route here is computed, not copied from another chart. A program tries every combination of up to three darts that ends on a double, and for each score keeps the route a player would choose: the fewest darts; then the preferred finishing double; then the easiest setup darts: T20 over any other treble, a big single over a small treble, the single bull only when it leaves something better, and never a double to set up. Throwline's scoreboard and its in-app chart run the same calculation, so the routes on this page are the ones the app shows.

170: T20, T20 and the bull. It is the highest score three darts can finish on a double.
What are the bogey numbers in darts?
The scores of 170 or less that three darts cannot finish on a double: 159, 162, 163, 165, 166, 168 and 169.
What is the highest two-dart finish?
110: T20 Bull. Above 110, every finish takes three darts, and below it 99, 102, 103, 105, 106, 108 and 109 also need three.
Does the bull count as a double?
Yes. The inner bull is double 25, worth 50, so it finishes a double-out leg; 170, 167, 164 and 161 all finish on it. The outer bull, 25, is a single.
The chart, on the scoreboard
In Throwline the route lights up the moment a player is on a finish, and the whole chart is in the app, free. Throwline Pro adds the checkout trainer: ten targets at a time from the doubles, the out shots or the big finishes, thrown at your own board.
